Calling All Carol Singers

The history of Carol singing may go back as far as the medieval era but it was during Victorian times when it became really popular. This was when Christmas became a holiday which families could enjoy, and music in the house was a big part of the celebrations. It would become a tradition to sing carols after the Christmas meal.

The first Carol service is believed to have been held at Truro Cathedral in 1880. It was organised by Edward White Benson, the first Bishop of Truro, who became Archbishop of Canterbury. A separate tradition of wassailing also existed as far back as Anglo Saxon times (wassail meaning ‘be well and in good health’). By the Victorian period wassailers were carolling groups who went round the town and would be rewarded with a hot spiced drink known as wassail.

Today Carol singers are usually found in town squares, shopping centres, hospitals and old peoples’ homes and are more likely to ask for donations to charity.

Anyway the Carol singing tradition is very much alive in Pattingham and you are warmly invited to join with the Church Choir in singing Christmas carols again this year to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the love he brought into the world.

These are the dates and locations:-

  • Pigot Arms, Pattingham  –  Wednesday 11 December, 8.15 pm
  • Dartmouth Arms, Burnhill Green  –  Tuesday 17 December, 7.00 pm
  • Pattingham Club  –  Friday 20 December, 7.30 pm

You also have an opportunity to sing carols at a number of Christmas services taking place at the Church during the Christmas season, including the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Sunday 22 December at 6.30 pm.

The Well – the Wolverhampton Food Bank

The Well

Christmas is known as a time to celebrate by giving gifts. It reflects the greatest gift ever given – God giving Himself to the world as a vulnerable baby, sharing our humanity. He has shown us the depth of His love for us by truly being God With Us.

Christmas is also a time when we share food with others as we celebrate.

Each December many of our supporters share food with strangers by giving donations to The Well.…so the annual Reverse Advent Calendar is back by popular demand. The idea is really simple – put the item on the list into a box/bag each day during December leading up to Christmas. Then donate it to the Well to help the hungry and vulnerable in our area this Christmas. Please give as generously as you are able.

Please choose an item/s from this list to donate to The Well:

  • UHT Milk
  • Tinned Ham
  • Tinned Vegetables
  • Cooking/ Pasta Sauce
  • Tinned Fruit
  • Custard / Tinned Cream
  • Gravy Granules
  • Jam / Marmalade
  • Rice / Noodles
  • Christmas Pudding
  • Christmas Cake
  • Brandy Sauce /White Sauce
  • Special Biscuits
  • Non-alcoholic Sparkling Drink
  • Chocolates
  • Gift Toiletries

NB:We can only receive food within its Use By/BBE’ date.

Please leave your donations at the back of the church or for collection please call Alan on 07757 688518

If you wish to know more about the work of The Well, or would like to know how you can support it in other ways, do connect via their website, where you can sign up to the newsletter and link to their Social Media pages: <www.thewellwolverhampton.co.uk>

Dementia Friendly Church

Weekly Prayer

Becoming Dementia Friendly Church 2024-25

Father, we know that you love each person living with Dementia dearly and that you want them to experience life to the fullest.
We fervently ask that even in the midst of their difficulties, you would instill in them a sense of joy and purpose.
May the knowledge that you are with them at every turn bring them peace and hope.
We ask all these through your son and saviour, Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
Amen.
