Terry Mackriel playing cornet

A One-Line Trumpet Player

Looking for something else I came across a photo of myself, playing the cornet on a Sunday afternoon with the Wolverhampton Silver Band. I started playing the trumpet and cornet when I was 10 years old.

When I was 14 and had to select which GCE subjects to take I included music on the list. This did not go down well as my music teacher explained that as “a one-line trumpet player” I would find it difficult answering a question which represented 30% of the marks available. Getting this right was critical to getting a decent mark overall.

The question consisted of hearing a chord played on the piano and being able to write it down. The chord was the playing of 4 harmonic notes together, of which the trumpet, flute, trombone etc played the top Line. A pianist would understand such chords, but not a “one-line trumpet player”.

I stood my ground and my wish was granted. My music teacher gave me extra lessons, playing chords every day until I began “to tune in”.

The day of the exam arrived. I entered the music room to be greeted by an elderly examiner who said, “Young man, I will play the chord 3 times, with 2 minutes between each playing”. He struck the chord, producing a “bong” sound.

I listened, wrote down the chord, and he glanced at my answer from behind. He played again – “Bang”. It sounded slightly different – panic set in. I erased my first answer and adjusted it by raising it half a tone. He walked by and Looked at my response. As he walked away he said “young man, I have learned in life that sometimes one’s first impressions are correct.” I quickly erased again changing” Bang” back to “Bong”.

What a sport? What’s the moral position of the situation? I didn’t care. I thought he was just trying to help “a one-line trumpet player”.

Weekly Prayer

Dear Lord
Shine your ever guiding light on all those that need support caring for or living with the struggles of dementia.
Shine your ever guiding light and embrace them in their darkest days, give them hope and strength and courage.
Shine your ever guiding light to show them where there is support and allow them to live the best life they can.
Shine your ever guiding light to enable them to continue with their faith in all its glory, knowing that they are loved and cherished.
Shine your ever guiding light so that they know you are always by their side, walking with them along this strange and sometimes frustrating path.
Surround them with kindness and compassion, that the light will forever glow and bring comfort on their journey.
Amen

(Prayer written by Tracey Williams for the 2024 Diocese “Share a Prayer” Project for Dementia Awareness Week.)

If you would like to suggest (or write) a prayer for inclusion in this series please let Tracey Williams, our Dementia Friendly Church Co-ordinator, know.
