View from the Pews

Dorothy Steel

“God give me grace…”

Whilst there are several versions (this one was amended after 1951 to include the word ‘grace’) the words originally written by Reinhold Niebuhr are both encouraging and supportive because we can all reflect on a time when we have made this or similar prayers.

God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

These words came to my mind recently as I was praying for Peace, thinking about the terrible conflicts and wars around the world and what as an individual we can do? We can all pray, and this becomes something quite wonderful as we realise how Christians all over the world are doing just the same. If you would like to join a small group for 15 minutes of Prayers for Peace, come along to church at 6 pm each Tuesday.

Praying alone  can sometimes be quite difficult, to still the mind and soul from the busy demands of our lives. We all do it in different ways and I have previously shared the fact that whilst my ironing is not very skilful – I find it a wonderful time for prayer! I frequently include:

God be in my head,
And in my understanding;
God be in mine eyes,
And in my looking;
God be in my mouth,
And in my speaking;
God be in my heart,
And in my thinking;
God be at mine end,
And at my departing.

(Sarum Primer, 1558)
(Music: Sir Henry Walford Davies (1869–1941)

So, whether we pray in joy, giving thanks and praise or asking for Our Lord to intercede, or using a Bible quotation – just do it and know you are partaking in something wonderful!

God Bless,
Dorothy Steel

Communion Services

For the last few months we have been trialling a system to avoid congestion around the chancel step as people go up to and come back from communion. The PCC has reviewed this and has taken account of comments which have been made and decided to continue with this system. When going to communion those in the side aisles will go to the back of the church and then go to the centre aisle to go forward to the chancel. To return to their seats they do not need to go via the back unless there is an obstruction to the shorter route.

The sidespersons usually guide the congregation in knowing when to leave their seats. The usual practice is for those in the centre aisle to go up after the choir and then those in the south aisle and then those in the north aisle.

The Well continues to need our donations and prayers. The box remains at the rear of the church for donations of food and toiletries and the wishing well for donations of cash.

Dementia Friendly Church

Weekly Prayer

Becoming Dementia Friendly Church 2024-25

Lord , I am what I am.

I give thanks for the life I’ve had;
For the memories that will live on
Through others when I remember no more;

For the love of family and friends
Who will go on loving me when
I no longer show that I love or care;

For the care-givers, the doctors and nurses
Who are with me and will be with me
Every step of the way.

I am what I am.

I have been nurtured by you, Lord,
And give thanks for the fact that
You love me – for who I was,
For who I am, for what I become.

We can walk this path together
Hand in hand:
I know I am not alone, that you
Will be by my side always.

Amen

(Written by Heather Wright – from the diocese’s Book of Prayers)

If you would like to suggest (or write) a prayer for inclusion in this series please let Tracey Williams, our Dementia Friendly Church Co-ordinator, know.
