View from the Pews

The following is an extract from an article by Bishop Sarah Mullalley, incoming Archbishop of Canterbury, in the Big Issue Christmas Special.
I thought it might be appropriate at this time of year when we can experience the ‘January blues’. You may think so too.
Alan Smith
Let’s keep the kindness going after Christmas is over
We cannot have Christmas every day. But we can strive to capture its message of hope in the midst of the harsher realities of human life, long after the presents are unwrapped, the carol singers have left and the mulled wine is finished.
In one of my favourite poems, The Work of Christmas, by Howard Thurman, he writes:
When the song of the angel is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among others,
To make music in the heart.
(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Rotas
As a stopgap I have put together the rotas for the first three months of this year. They have been emailed to those concerned and a copy is on the notice board at the back of the church.
We are looking for someone to take on the responsibility for the rotas which Elaine Lavendar, with her husband Peter Nicholls, did for 10 years until her recent death. If anyone would like to find out what would be involved speak to me or one of the churchwardens.
We would welcome people to join the rotas. At the Sunday evening services there are opportunities to read lessons and for sidespersons. At the Sunday morning services there are opportunities to read lessons, lead intercessions, serve at the altar, do coffee and for sidespersons. If you would be interested in volunteering for any of these please speak to me, one of the churchwardens or the Vicar to find out more.
There are also separate rotas for the church flowers and for brass cleaning. Margaret Harris deals with the flower rota and Elizabeth Gosling deals with the brass rota. They would both welcome new blood.

Ukraine Refugee Centre
Thank you again for all your wonderful support and donations.
On Friday I took a boot and back seat full to the Ukraine Centre plus two cash donations. Providing they are open I plan to make my next visit on 18th February.
Your kindness means so very much
God Bless
Mary Hayward
If you have anything you wish to donate please contact Mary at or 01902 700744 or in Church.
The Well – the Wolverhampton Food Bank
During 2025 the congregation and Shower Singers donated a total of 479.2 kg (that’s 10.5 cwt) in food and toiletries (plus 279 kg from the harvest) to the Well. In addition £1,205 was donated through cash gifts and the wishing well.
This is an amazing achievement, even more so in such difficult economic times. Everyone at the Well is extremely grateful for your support and we thank God for everyone’s generosity.
The financial position has improved this year but, along with many similar organisations, food and toiletry donations at Christmas were well down on 2024 so please continue to give as generously as you are able.

Dementia Friendly Church
Weekly Prayer
A Prayer for caring for people with dementia.
Loving God. I prayer I bring to you my despair at watching someone I love change from the capable person they were to someone who finds even the simplest task a challenge. Please give me the strength to do my best to provide the support required in my role as carer. Forgive me, Lord, when I am at the end of my tether and help me remember that my loved one is simply lost and frightened and does not intend to challenge me and encourage me to think of strategies which will help my loved one cope as the illness progresses.
I give thanks for the support given by friends, family, medical and other agencies. I give thanks for the joy when a solution is found, even if it is only for a short while. I pray that you will guide those involved in research to find a cure for this cruel illness and that sufficient funding is invested by those in power.
Loving God, help all carers of dementia sufferers never forget that you walk with them and that your love and blessing remain with them at all times.
Amen
