View from the Pews

In August last year Shelagh and I visited Liverpool. We went to the cathedral which is the biggest Cathedral in Britain and the fifth largest in Europe. It was built in the 20th century and its architect was Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. His grandfather, Sir George Gilbert Scott, was responsible for the restoration of our church from 1856 and the addition of the outer north aisle and the spire.
The cathedral contains a number of works of art, one of which caught my attention. I thought it could form the basis of a View from the Pews. It is Painting of Crucifixion by Gary Bunt. It is described as “Bert, his dog, our God – An artist’s impression of the New Testament.” It is accompanied by a poem, “Our Best Friend”, which is by the artist.
As you can see the painting shows hills with a man and his dog looking up at Jesus on the cross. (If you can’t see the image in this email then look at this edition of ChadNet on the church website.) That made me think of our church where a number of dogs come to services with their owners.
The painting of The Good Samaritan by Adrian Wisznieski was very striking, although I wasn’t clear what it was depicting until I read about it. If you’re interested in seeing that and the other artworks you can find them on the Liverpool Cathedral website (https://liverpoolcathedral.org.uk/about-us/art-in-the-cathedral/).

Our Best Friend
Poem by Gary Bunt 2020
I walk beside my master
through valleys, over hills
Today we have come to say a prayer
among the daffodils.
They nailed our best friend to a cross,
then left him all alone,
We wanted to say goodbye to him
before he goes back home.
Back to heaven with his Father, God
who loves us all,
He loves the world; he loves us dogs,
God loves Liverpool!
(As always this View is the personal view of the author.)

Dementia Friendly Church
Weekly Prayer
Dear Father God,
Enfold me in your loving care.
My life, my memories, my soul are yours.
Your Everlasting love protects and surrounds me,
Nurturing my soul as dementia reveals my innermost vulnerabilities.
Take all that I am, protect and guide me through this confusing journey.
Instil in me peace and trust in you to hold me safely in your loving arms as I grow closer to you.
Amen
(Lichfield Diocese“Share a Prayer” Dementia 2023)
