View from the Pews

St Chad’s Church Pattingham is moving into its fourth year of being a Dementia Friendly Church. Every year to attain our certificate we have to choose three actions. We have done various things in the past – training sessions, providing a notice board and items of interest and leaflets that are situated within church and our wonderful “Pattingham Past and Present” event, together with holding a Dementia Friendly Church service annually. We are just in the process of thinking about our actions for the coming year.
Our final action for this past year is our Memory Walk in aid of Alzheimer`s Society. You may have already seen the poster on facebook.
Dementia affects so many people and I am sure we will all be aware of someone, friend or within our family, living with or caring for someone. Please join us on Sunday 12th April for our walk leaving the church at 2pm to walk a route around Hamley Woods surrounded by nature; hopefully the weather will be a beautiful spring day. We can walk and talk together in love, hope and remembrance, returning to church for refreshments.
You can also support in other ways suitable for you, whether it be laps around the garden, choosing your own more challenging route, or joining bigger organised events. Milly Colin-Stokes’ View from the Pews with her commitment to the Bristol Half Marathon and her wonderful piece about her lovely Grandma, Norma, is an example of this. Whatever your choice we would love to hear your stories.
As I previously mentioned there is a notice board in Church and books to borrow and leaflets to take. I will be adding one this week. Some of you may have seen Stacey Solomon`s “Sort Your Life Out” BBC show (can be found on BBC iPlayer Series 6 Episode 1). The father in this family, Gerald, had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer`s at the age of 55. He has had a book of his poems published and the poems help him with how he is feeling the good and the bad. I will leave you with one of his poems.

MY BED
Some days can be a real struggle,
Just to open your eyes and raise your head.
The weight of the world rests on your shoulders,
Today I think I`ll stay in bed.
As I slowly slip below the sheets,
My troubled thoughts, they drift away.
My comfort zone, a place to hide,
I think I`ll stay in bed all day.
But this is just the first of many,
Battles fought along the way.
To give up now would mean such sorrow.
For the loss of another precious day.
So I drag myself onto my feet,
Open my eyes and raise my head.
Then take those steps to walk away,
From the comfort zone that is my bed.

Dementia Friendly Church
Weekly Prayer

O Lord, only you know the battles we face,
the tears we shed.
Help us to live this and every day under the
shadow of your wing.
Give us patience to forebear whatever life
brings us. Courage to face it head on, strength
to keep moving forward, laughter to enjoy
ourselves and above all your love to
encompass it.
Amen
(Prayer written by Linda Gillion, a guide at the Cathedral, for Dementia Action Week Prayers 2024)
If you would like to suggest (or write) a prayer for inclusion in this series please let Tracey Williams, our Dementia Friendly Church Co-ordinator, know.
