‘Maureen’s Musings’

The Vicar’s monthly letter for the Parish News

The VicarJune 2018

This month I am writing this just before I go on holiday, with the Eurovision Song Contest having just started and a week before a certain Royal Wedding! So forgive me if I am a little distracted as I write!

And while you may be excited by thoughts of who will win?, or what will the dress look like?, I have been thrilled by today’s news that Meghan and Harry have asked the Rt. Revd. Michael Curry, the Presiding Bishop of ECUSA, to preach at their wedding. What a fantastic symbolism of the union of British and American culture represented by this marriage. To be married by one Archbishop, and have another (or at least the equivalent) preaching at your wedding service is pretty special.

But by the time you read this, it will all be in the past (as will my holiday!) and life will have passed on to other crises and other celebrities. Such is the nature of time. It is relentless in its march.

In April I was fortunate in being able to attend the Clergy Conference. Now in June comes an opportunity for all people to attend a conference on 9 June at Yarnfield Park under the title Food for the Journey; Christian-Muslim Storytelling – which sounds like a fascinating title.

After a bible study led by Bishop Michael, there will be two dramatized stories of Christian-Muslim engagement performed by a the Khayaal Theatre Company. One will be from a Christian perspective about St Francis, and another, from a Muslim perspective, about Muslims sent into exile to a Christian kingdom. This will be followed by discussion workshops and other presentations. The day will be summed up by the Revd. Rachel Parkinson, Chair of the Wolverhampton & Shrewsbury Methodist District. More details available from John Underhill on 0793 6300297.

And I am also sure that by June we will all be gearing up for our annual church and village fete – which this year is coming up on 7 July. The only shame being that this date clashes with another spectacular event being put on by the Diocese at Shallowford House on the same day, the Encourage Festival – a sort of local version of Greenbelt. Oh well, no doubt there will be other years… I know where my loyalty has to lie!

Let’s just console ourselves by praying for good weather for all the summer events coming up – it would be nice to have a proper summer for once wouldn’t it!

Now it’s time for me to start cheering on the British entry for Eurovision…. Even if we do stand no chance of winning in this very partisan contest … that is no longer the point of the evening is it!

Every Blessing

Maureen
