Ken Scott was licensed as a Reader in June 1980 by the Bishop of Lichfield, Kenneth Skelton.
Since then he has served as a Reader in three parishes – first at St Jude’s, Wolverhampton – then at Christ Church, Tettenhall Wood and since 2009 at St Chad’s, Pattingham. He decided to “lay down his scarf” and retire as a Reader at the end of April 2025.
His last service as a Reader was the evening service on Easter Day, 20th April. It was a Songs of Praise service and included some of his favourite hymns. It was attended by about 160 people, including members of Ken’s family and friends from his previous parishes.
After the service Ken and Anne, his wife, were presented with a gift from the congregation as a thank you for their service to the church in many ways over the years and Anne was given a bouquet of flowers. Those present then partook of refreshments and conversation.
We wish Ken and Anne all the best and know that they both remain a part of our congregation and will carry on supporting the church and others in various ways.
Ken’s View from the Pews in ChadNet for Easter weekend was a reflection on his time as a Reader and can be read here. The following week Ken and Anne wrote a View from the Pews, which can be read here, thanking everyone for their kindness.
Ken wrote an article in the November 2017 edition of the Parish News magazine about the work of a Reader. That can be found here.
Ken was given a card from the school to mark his retirement from ministry. He says that he was very touched by it. It is such lovely thing with a finger print from every child in the school.
The photographs below were taken by Ken’s son-in-law, Dieter Lloyd.
