View from the Pews

This is the second of two Views from the Pews which have been contributed by members of the Prayers for Peace group who meet in church every Tuesday evening to pray for peace.
As someone with previous family connections to both Russia and Ukraine, my experience of Prayers for Peace has been different every week. As soon as the candle is lit, we come together and pray for families, refugees, soldiers, children and the wider picture around the world. No two weeks are ever the same. Sometimes we focus our prayers on particular named individuals, or it may be a recent event that has just happened. Prayers can be silent or spoken, at length or just a sentence. We know the Lord hears us and with hope, our faith and persistence, that peace and justice will come in due course.
Jill Baker 🙏🏻
My experience is I appreciate the tremendous value of the quiet 15 minutes, a time of calm and reflection, to appreciate how blessed we are and to ask God to intercede to help others in need. Our firm belief is in the power of prayer, the knowledge that God is listening and there will be a time of joy to replace the suffering and sorrow.
Dorothy Steel
The news on our screens from Ukraine has been so awful and we feel so helpless. Nevertheless, when we light our candle and sit quietly in a circle we feel God’s nearness and we pray that He will be with the people in Ukraine: the ordinary families like us and the soldiers bravely defending their country. We sometimes pray out loud and sometimes just quietly in our heads. We can’t solve the problem but we earnestly pray that God can and we all hope that the people in Ukraine feel the support of all the people round the world who are praying for them.

I enjoy being with other people so that we can pray together for God’s help in stopping those in power from making the wrong choices and giving us the strength to do what is right. God always listens and even when he chooses not to answer immediately, or in the way we might have hoped, we know that prayer itself is a way to find peace.

Collections
We have reintroduced taking collections during services. The card machines will still be at the back of the church for those who use a credit or debit card.
Many people give to the church in other ways – including Giving Direct, paying into the bank, using the card machines – so they would not be expected to put anything into the bag as it is passed round.

Many thanks to everybody who contributed to the foreign currency appeal. The total sterling payment was £160.75 which has been made up to £175 from church funds. All at the Well are very grateful for your support. This appeal is now closed but we will look to do it again in the future.
Harvest produce from the church and school will again be donated to the Well. All gifts are welcome and in the next couple of weeks we will publish the shopping list of items which are urgently needed.

Dementia Friendly Church
Weekly Prayer

Loving Lord
You are the light
when our earthly bodies grown weary and faint.
You are the constant,
as we are reminded through the history of this Cathedral
and the ministry of Saint Chad,
who offered, healing, hope and peace of mind to all that follow you.
We pray now for the gentle breeze of your Holy Spirit,
To guide us on our journey of life.
Thank you that you are the Good Shepherd
That always protects his sheep,
now and forever more.
Amen
(Prayer written for Dementia Action Week Prayers 2024 – author unknown.)
