View from the Pews
Anyone in Church three weeks ago would have heard at least one of a couple of excellent addresses by Roberta Maxfield and by Iain Coleman, both of which were on the themes of the need for us to be non-judgmental, be open-minded and above all to do such works as we think fit without boasting or fanfare.
Recently my wife Liz was in Telford doing a bit of shopping and, as happens to her nowadays, she felt a bit drained and in need of a break, a sit-down and a coffee. Standing in the queue at a welcome Costa, she thought she had just the right change and was fumbling in her purse, unsuccessfully as it turned out, to find it. A voice behind her said “I’ll pay for that” and a hand stretched forward with a phone and “ping” – all was done. She turned and saw a large young man in shorts and tee-shirt smiling at her who wouldn’t take no for an answer, despite my wife’s grateful protestations and thanks to him. Both he and the barista beamed at her and said “that’s how it is today – done!”
When she returned, full of this quite unexpected and humbling act of generosity, it gave us both another pause for reflection. It’s easy, isn’t it, especially as we get older, when we see others around us, to think that we are sometimes invisible to younger generations, whose lives are so much faster, internet and ether connected in ways we often find baffling. I don’t suppose this man realised that he was carrying out a Christian act of charity, perhaps he did, we shall never know, but that one act of kindness transformed Liz’s day. It just goes to show that, as Iain reminded us, it’s not the outside which is important, but the inside of a person which matters. These little things are so unutterably important.
A friend sent me this a day or two ago – a poem by Spike Milligan
Smiling is infectious – you catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too.
I walked around the corner and someone saw me grin.
When he smiled I realised I had passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile and then realised its worth.
A single smile like mine could travel round the earth.
So if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected.
Start an epidemic – and get the World infected.
Henry Ibberson

Dementia Friendly Church
Weekly Prayer
Shepherd of my path, so I have dementia. Give me grace to accept this as part of the pattern of my life and that of others. May I enjoy the present moment and all the life I have yet to live. Grant me humility to accept the assistance I will need. I give you gratitude for all those I am finding who so readily offer that help. Lord, you walked an unwelcome path you feared into a dark unknown. It took greater courage than mine to do that willingly. In my darkening path, take me by the hand and share your courage with me.Amen
(Prayers for Dementia and how to live well with it Fay Sampson)
If you would like to suggest (or write) a prayer for inclusion in this series please let Tracey Williams, our Dementia Friendly Church Co-ordinator, know.
