View from the Pews

I am sure many of you have seen various Poppy installations on iconic buildings and churches. They make quite a statement in respect of remembering the fallen in our wars and conflicts.

SO CALLING ALL KNITTERS AND THOSE THAT CROCHET
WE NEED YOU!
We are planning an installation for St Chad`s this November and we need lots and lots of poppies. If you would like to be involved please contact me on 07804039330 or via email
The wool will be supplied and we are hoping to organise some group sessions after the 10am service on a Wednesday to get together over a cuppa and cake.
I would really like to learn and I am sure others may wish to, so hopefully we will have some willing teachers. The more poppies the bigger the installation we can create. I have also sourced a pattern if you would like one.
The Poppy as a symbol of remembrance began during World War 1 rooted in the devastation of the Western Front It serves as a lasting tribute to those who served in armed conflicts. The Red Poppy is the most recognised symbol of remembrance with Purple Poppies for the animals that lost their life during their war service.
After witnessing poppies growing around the graves of soldiers Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae wrote this poem.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
I would also like to bring your attention to “The Longest Yarn” which I was lucky to view when it was being exhibited at Stoke Minster.
Lichfield Cathedral are going to exhibit it from Friday 1st to Sunday 31st May. It is truly stunning. The skill of those who have created all these scenes are amazing with such intricate detail. There is more information on the Lichfield Cathedral website here. The cathedral is planning its own Poppy installation in 2027!

Dementia Friendly Church
Weekly Prayer

Be close to thosFaithful God
My memory is not what it used to be. I forget things. I forget people. But they do not forget me.
I give you heartfelt thanks that I have people around me who love me and care for me. They understand what is happening to me.
Always I have you beside me.
You show me that it does not really matter if I forget things. I`m allowed to.
Give me the grace to see that the present is enough for me. I still enjoy my favourite food. I have not lost the gift of laughter. I have someone to guide me where I need to go.
And I have my memories of the past, which seem to grow more vivid day by day.
Let me meet the days ahead with trust and serenity. Bless all those who walk beside me.
Hold my Hand.
Amen
(Prayers for Dementia and how to live well with it. Fay Sampson)
If you would like to suggest (or write) a prayer for inclusion in this series please let Tracey Williams, our Dementia Friendly Church Co-ordinator, know.
