View from the Pews
I am sure you will agree that “things” happen in your life that make you stop and re-evaluate. Covid made me retire earlier than I planned. However, since “semi” retiring I seem to have become much busier than when I worked full time. You have time for other things. In my case helping care for grandchildren which was always in my retirement plan. Becoming a member of the PCC and taking on the Parish Safeguarding role. Yes, I do “do lunch” and meet for coffee with friends and family and I do have more time to visit other places of interest, therefore I have invested in a National Trust and English Heritage membership plus a senior rail card! On reflection I should do more exercise, eat healthier etc., and these do cross my mind but it is finding the motivation to instill them into my daily routine. As for the last 23 years conditioned to 12hr shifts, grab what you can when you can!
So with all this going on my next passion to bring to St Chad`s Church is to enable it to be designated a Dementia Friendly Church. My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s eighteen months ago and I do come across the many various forms of Dementia in my professional life. There are many of us who know of family or friends who sadly have one of the many forms of Dementia. How devastating it is not only for the individual concerned but the ripple effect it has throughout the family. At present my Dad just has a few memory problems, he is still independent living with my mum and they have great support from the Alzheimer’s Society. Unfortunately, they reside on the East Sussex Coast so my sisters and I are not in a position to just pop in regularly, but between us we make regular visits and we have installed a portal for facetime (as long as mum and dad don’t inadvertently turn it off or we have big issues trying to get reconnected). This is what spurred my interest into looking into Dementia and how could we support those living locally.
I attended an Introduction to Dementia course and met the wonderful Sarah Thorpe, who is the lead Dementia Enabler at the Lichfield Diocese. It was a fabulous presentation and I learnt so much. Since then I have attended a “Forget me not” tea at St Andrew’s Church in Shifnal. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and had a wonderful afternoon. I would very much like to arrange something similar here in Pattingham at some point. We have now commenced the process to enable St Chad’s to hold this title of “Dementia Friendly Church”. I have been formally made the Dementia Co-Ordinator and I am sourcing material to have an information board set up in the near future within church, to bring awareness and, more importantly, support to those who may need it. We want everyone to feel they can attend our church, to feel comfortable and without anxiety, be they carers or those suffering. When this is in place, do please have a look and by all means borrow any resources that may be of interest to you. Later in the year a Dementia Themed Service will be arranged. I appreciate there is a lot of information out there BUT not everyone has access to this online or knows how to access it. All forms of communication and information should be available.
One thing I have learned. Retirement opens the door to new interests, meeting new people and opportunities, enriching your life in so many ways.
Best Wishes to you all
Tracey Williams
