View from the Pews
From the archive …
As no one else has written a View from the Pews this week I wondered what I could use to fill the space.
Scans of the old church magazines (from the first issue in 1869 until 1884) are available on the church website (at <https://www.pattinghamchurch.org.uk/web/information/parish-news-magazine/parish-magazine-history/>) so I had a look through those from 1874 to see if there was anything which I could use.
In the September magazine I found an account of the Laying of the Foundation Stone of the school, which took place exactly 150 years ago on 18th August 1874 which I thought would be of interest. For those unfamiliar with the clergy of the time the Vicar was the Rev W G Greenstreet and Rev J P O’Connor was the Curate.

LAYING OF THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE NEW PATTINGHAM PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS, ON TUESDAY, 18TH AUGUST, 1874.
In the regretted but unavoidable absence of the Earl and Countess of Dartmouth, who left for the Continent on the previous day, the ceremony on this occasion partook of almost a private character. On very short notice, comparatively few were present: among them, the Vicar, the Rev. J.P. ancl Mrs. O’Connor, Mr. Hawley, (Superintendent of the works,) Messrs. Joseph and Thomas Thorpe, (Builders,) Mr. and Mrs. Cleasby, Miss Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Lakin, Miss Ethel and Miss Clara Hazledine, Mr. Thomas Clarke, Mr. Henry Matthews, Miss Caroline Matthews, Mrs. John Owen, Miss Thorpe, Miss Louis Lees, Miss Mary Ann Law, Miss Emily Finney, and Mr. Woodhouse.
The Vicar opened the proceedings with the following Address:
“Dearly Beloved,
“Forasmuch as it hath pleased Almighty God to put into the hearts of His servants to erect in this place a suitable Building for the religious, moral, and secular instruction of the Children of this Parish, we are here met together to ask His blessing on the laying of the Foundation Stone thereof; that in this, and all other works, begun, continued, and ended in Him, we may glorify His holy Name, and finally by His mercy may obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
The 578h No. of the “Church Hymns” was then sung by a few members of the Choir and about 30 children of the National Schools; commencing with the following verse :-
“There’s a Friend for little children
Above the bright blue sky;
A Friend that never changes,
Whose love will never die.
Unlike our friends by nature,
Who change with changing years,
This Friend is always worthy
The precious name He bears.”
After the singing of this Hymn, Mrs. O’Connor laid the Foundation Stone; striking it three times with the mallet, and saying these words:- “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”
Mr. O’Connor immediately added :- “We lay this Foundation Stone of a Parochial School, to be erected and dedicated to the glory of God, and to be set apart for the training of Children. in the nurt11re and admonition of the Lord, in the faith and discipline of the Church of England, and in such other knowledge as may fit them to do their duty in that state of life to which it may please God to call them.”
THE VICAR THEN SAID:
“Let us pray.
“O Lord Jesu Christ, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the Ending, vouchsafe, we ‘beseech Thee, to pour clown Thy blessing upon the work which is here undertaken in Thy Name: and, of Thy goodness, grant that the promoters and furtherers of this and every other holy object for the advancement of Thy glory and the welfare of our fellow creatures may be everlastingly rewarded through Thy mercy, O blessed Lord Goel, who dost live, and govern all things, world without end. Amen.”
“O Almighty God, the Protector of all that trust in Thee, receive our humble intercessions in behalf of those who may be engaged in the erection of this Building. Preserve and defend them in all dangers ghostly and bodily; and enrich them with Thy heavenly grace: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
Then followed The Lord’s Prayer.
After which the following Benediction closed the interesting ceremony:-
“The. Lord, bless us, and keep us; the Lord make His face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us ; the Lord lift up His countenance upon us, and give· us peace, both now and evermore. Amen.”

We have reintroduced taking collections during services. The card machines will still be at the back of the church for those who use a credit or debit card.
Many people give to the church in other ways – including Giving Direct, paying into the bank, using the card machines – so they would not be expected to put anything into the bag as it is passed round.
Youth and Family Worker
We are looking for a Youth and Family Worker
This is an exciting opportunity to join the leadership of St Chad’s Church in Pattingham, in a brand new role.
Are you an inspiring and enthusiastic person ready to pioneer new work that will enable young people and families to encounter the love of God and become part of our church?
The focus will be on children in early years through to teenagers, bringing the good news to families encouraging them to become more involved with the church.

The Well – the Wolverhampton Food Bank
The Well continues to need our donations and prayers.
The box remains at the rear of the church for donations of food and toiletries and the wishing well for donations of cash. Foreign coins can be put into the wishing well (in a separate bag please) and they will also go to help the needy in Wolverhampton and the surrounding area.
We are extremely grateful for all donations. If you are looking for ideas on what to donate to The Well at the moment, the following are in short supply:
• UHT Milk
• Male Toiletries
• Tinned Vegetables
• Pasta Sachets
• Rice Pudding
• Custard
At The Well we take our inspiration from Jesus Himself. We look back at His life and, even though He was the Son of God, His mission on earth was ‘to serve’, not ’to be served’.
As you think about how you might support The Well, maybe your ‘service’ is to hold us regularly in your prayers, maybe it is to support us financially if you are able, maybe to donate some food or encourage those around you to do so, or maybe it is to offer some of your time to The Well.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Dementia Friendly Church
Weekly Prayer
Dear Lord,
Please give me help and understanding as we
journey through the unknown face of
Dementia.
As a carer, guide me always to find the best
way to see through the confusion and delight
In holding the hand of the person I love;
and may the smile on his face shine through.
Amen
(Prayer written for Dementia Action Week Prayers 2024 by by Geraldine Somerton.)
