View from the Pews

Enjoying the views

When I was working full time, driving to Worcester every day, then doing work at home most evenings and weekends, I really didn’t fully appreciate how wonderful a place Pattingham and its people truly are. I knew the church, the Co-op, the hardware store (as was), the flower shop and The Crown. That was it.

Millenium footpaths

Then, when our two sons were of an age, I appreciated the adventure play area adjacent to the football pitch and the tennis courts, where they both ran me ragged. It wasn’t until I finally retired that I came to fully realise how amazing a place the village and villagers genuinely are. Well before lockdown I had discovered the variety of pathways and trails that are available to us all – and I can guarantee that nobody living within its boundaries is more than five minutes away from a good walk.

Landscape

The countryside is open to us on all sides – and what a visual feast and sensory treat it provides. Rolling terrain, endless fields, lush farmland with well-tended crops, distant hills, vibrant woodland – we have it all, and I have to reflect on all this natural beauty and its relationship to the Creator.

When Jesus was preaching his sermons and performing his miraculous acts he performed them all in the open, under blue skies and colling breezes. He had his times of trial and hardships in the desert for forty days and forty nights. He questioned what he would be called upon to do as he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was not surrounded by the walls of an intricately crafted temple or the glowing colours of artistically created stained glass windows. He was – quite simply – wedded to the landscape, under God’s own sky.

Path in woods

This is why I, for one, believe that on a quiet, reflective walk, surrounded by the wonders of the natural world and refreshed by fresh air and the sound of birdsong, we can experience a calm and a sense of oneness with the world. And whilst it does not replace the coming together of the congregation in church to celebrate and worship the Holy Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – it certainly enhances the spiritual experience.

Contacts

Maureen has started her well earned retirement. She will still be living in the Vicarage for a few weeks so we will still see her and Suzie about. She is no longer our Vicar.

For matters which would normally be dealt with by the Vicar the churchwardens are the first point of contact. The Vicarage phone (01902 700257) is redirected to the churchwardens. When they are not available a message can be left on the voicemail and they will return the call when they are available. Emails to will be received by the churchwardens.

Contact details for church officers can be found on the Contacts page of the church website. You can use if you are nore sure who to contact and the churchwardens will be able to forward it to the correct person.

Resources for worship and prayer at home

Some of resources which can be used at home are listed on the Resources Available Online and the Resources Available for Children, Young People and Families pages of the website.

For those who are unable to attend church to make their communion there is a form of Spriritual Communion on the Church of England website.

In the absence of our own Sunday School we encourage children and families to look at the Virtual Sunday School YouTube channel. A new Sunday School video now comes out every two weeks on a Saturday. This week’s is Parable of the Sheep & Goats + a visit to the farm! There will be a Virtual Holiday Club in August – there is a video Pick Your Team for Virtual Holiday Club!

They can all be found on the Sunday School on the Web page of our website as well as on YouTube.

Giving to the church

In the current circumstances there will inevitably be a reduction in the money which the church receives. However we will need to continue to pay our bills and we would ask that those who can afford to do so should continue to give regularly. Details of the various ways in which you can give can be found on the Giving page of the website.

We have a JustGiving page to enable people to make one off donations. It’s at www.justgiving.com/pattingham-church. You will be asked if you want to make a contribution on top of your donation. If you do it will go to JustGiving and not to charity. If you do not want to make such a contribution select “other”. If you are a taxpayer please consider gift aiding your donation.

If you are paying by cheque please make the cheque payable to “Pattingham PCC” or “Pattingham Parochial Church Council“.
